What is DTG Ink

DTG Ink is a range of digital textile pigment inks. Direct to Garment pigment ink offers an ease of fixation process and an environment-friendly process to print on natural fibers. Besides these inks for DTG Printer are largely fabric-independent.At the heart of this process are DTG inks, which are specially formulated for use with DTG printers.

Benefits of DTG Ink

High-Quality Prints

DTG inks offer exceptional quality compared to traditional screen-printing techniques. The accurate detail captured on the fabric makes it more desirable.

Quick Turnaround Time

With DTG printing technology, you can have custom prints ready within hours instead of waiting weeks with screen-printing techniques.

Affordable Costs

Generally speaking, DTG printers nowadays come equipped with bulk ink cartridges, significantly decreasing overhead expenses that can benefit both small shops and larger manufacturing units.

Environmentally Friendly Coloring Processes

Compared to other dye methods used traditionally, DTG uses color variations with fewer chemicals, leading “certain brands” to feel better about their Environmental responsibility (reducing carbon footprint where possible).

Types of DTG Ink

Water-Based Inks
Water-based inks are specifically designed for fabric printing, known for their ability to produce vibrant colours and intricate details. These inks use water as the primary solvent for the pigment they carry and are mostly made of acrylic resins or mixtures of acrylic resin and polyurethanes.Deep Penetration: Water-based inks penetrate textiles deeply, resulting in a soft print.Soft Feel: Made of soft resins and water, these inks provide a smooth, soft touch on fabrics.

Reactive Inks
Reactive inks are versatile and can be used for Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing, even though they were initially created for conventional printing. They are primarily used on natural fibres like cotton, viscose, wool, and silk.Permanent Bond: Reactive dye is the dye that can react with a fibre to form a covalent link, leading to durable prints.Excellent Color Reproduction: Ideal for complex, colourful designs.High Wash Fastness: Reactive inks ensure that garments can be washed multiple times without losing the print.

Acid Inks
Acid inks are high-quality inks used in the high-end fashion industry, particularly for printing on delicate silks, soft cashmere, and swimwear.Durable and Vibrant: These inks provide excellent colour fastness and are resistant to fading or washing out.High Colour Brilliance: Ideal for garments requiring frequent washing, such as swimwear made of lycra and nylon. These inks are known for their versatility, high chlorine and salt water tolerance and ability to produce vibrant and colorfast prints on these fibres.

Sublimation Inks
Sublimation inks are commonly used for printing on polyester fabrics. These inks have the unique property of transferring the dye directly onto the fabric under heat and pressure.Vibrant and Durable Prints: Resistant to washing out, cracking, and fading.Colour Accuracy: Known for creating prints with great colour accuracy.Material Compatibility: Not suitable for natural fibres; they require materials like polyester for the dye to bond properly.

Application of DTG Ink

Home decoration field
Curtains and pillows:DTG ink can print various patterns and designs on home textiles such as curtains and pillows, such as flowers, landscapes, geometric figures, etc., making home decoration more personalized and artistic.Consumers can choose different patterns according to their own home styles and preferences to create a unique home atmosphere.

Bedding
Bed sheets, quilt covers, pillowcases and other bedding can also be printed with DTG ink. For example, family photos, favorite patterns or personalized text can be printed on them to increase the fun and uniqueness of bedding.

Wallpaper and murals
DTG technology can also be applied to the production of wallpaper and murals. Compared with traditional wallpaper, DTG-printed wallpaper and murals can achieve more complex patterns and color effects, and can be customized according to customer needs to meet the personalized needs of different customers.

DTG Ink Costs for 3 Different Designs

Design 1: Plain and Simple

Design 1 is a simple 2-color design on a white shirt. The cost is less for both screen printing and DTG printing when compared to the other designs. To make a profit, the DTG Ink with genuine ink can print an order size of 61 shirts max before screen printing overtakes in terms of cost efficiency.

Design 2: Using a Black Shirt

Design 2 is also a 2-color design similar to Design 1, but is printed on a black shirt instead. while the Epson-compatible ink order size is slightly better at 26 shirts. For DTG printers, the cost to print a black shirt is almost triple the cost of printing a white shirt. This is because DTG printing requires a white underbase to be printed on colored/non-white shirts in order to let the colors stand out.

Design 3: Printing Complexity

Design 3 is a more complex design with more colors involved, which has a more profound effect for screen printing costs than it does for DTG printing. The maximum order size (before screen printing becomes more cost efficient than DTG) for with genuine ink is 46 shirts, while the is 56 shirts while the DTG Ink is 71 shirts.

How to Choose DTG Ink

DTG Textile Ink

Substrate
Choose an ink compatible with the surface you want to print on. CIJ ink works well on non-porous materials like plastics and metals, while pigment ink adheres better to porous substrates like cardboard or textiles.

Durability
If long-lasting print is required, pigment ink is likely your best option. For short-term markings, CIJ or TIJ ink can suffice.

Speed
For high-volume, high-speed printing, CIJ ink is designed to keep up with rapid production lines. TIJ and pigment inks may not dry quickly enough for very fast printing.

Environment
The conditions the print will be exposed to affect ink selection. Choose an ink with enhanced fade, water or chemical resistance if needed.

Cost
Inks vary in price depending on their properties and intended use. Pigment and TIJ ink typically cost more than CIJ ink. Consider your budget requirements when choosing an ink.

Process of DTG Ink

The DTG Ink is a complex process that requires specialized equipment and skilled operators. The use of high-speed dispersers, sand mills, and filling machines ensures that the final product is of high quality and meets the required specifications. The production line is an essential part of the printing industry, providing high-quality ink that is used in various applications such as packaging, labels, and magazines.

The DTG Ink typically consists of several stages, including mixing, grinding, dispersing, and filling. The first stage involves mixing the raw materials, which include pigments, binders, solvents, and additives. This is usually done in a high-speed disperser, which is a powerful mixing machine that can rapidly disperse and blend the ingredients to create a homogenous mixture.

The next stage is grinding, which involves reducing the particle size of the mixture to ensure that the ink will flow smoothly through the printing press. This is typically done using a sand mill, which is a specialized grinding machine that uses small beads to break down the particles. The sand mill is designed to produce a uniform particle size distribution and to minimize the amount of heat generated during the grinding process.

After grinding, the ink is transferred to a dispersing machine, which further breaks down the particles and ensures that the ink is properly dispersed. This is important because well-dispersed ink will produce sharper and more vibrant images. The dispersing machine is usually a high-speed mixer that uses a combination of shear and impact forces to break down the particles.

How to Maintain DTG Ink

Pay attention to the temperature
So, what are the screen printing ink storage temperatures you should pay attention to? Generally speaking, screen printing ink should be stored in a room where the temperature is between 65 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Increased or decreased values of this range can negatively affect the quality of the ink.If the ink container is stored at a temperature higher than 90 degrees, the ink will begin to gel and will be unusable for your next print.

Store away from sunlight
Although you have stored the ink container in a temperature-controlled room, the sun’s rays can affect the texture and reduce the quality of the screen printing ink. Make sure the ink is stored away from windows. Besides direct sunlight, avoid storing ink containers next to walls exposed to a lot of sun during hot summers as it can lead to a loss of ink quality.

Keep the stir sticks and scoops out of the ink container
It must have happened to you to forget the stir sticks and scoops in the ink bucket due to increased production. Although it seems like a completely unnecessary step, such a move can negatively affect the quality of the screen printing ink.Such accessories, especially if made of cardboard or wood, can affect the functionality and texture of the ink. Namely, such absorbent materials can absorb the plasticizer from the ink.

Ink care during production
When we think of correct ink grading, we also consider the wrinkle during production. Therefore, putting the lids back on the bins as soon as you have finished using the ink is always a good idea. This move will prevent lint and dust from entering the room, which can contaminate the ink. Also, ensure your ink is stored away from heat-generating machines like the flash cure unit and conveyor belt. The heat from these machines can cause the ink to harden and become partly unusable.

FAQ

Q: What are DTG inks?

A: Dura-Jet DTG Ink is a range of digital textile pigment inks. Direct to Garment pigment ink offers an ease of fixation process and an environment-friendly process to print on natural fibers. Besides these inks for DTG Printer are largely fabric-independent.

Q: Is DTG better than DTF?

A: When it comes to print quality, DTG often provides superior detail and color accuracy. However, DTF is not far behind, offering vibrant colors and a high-quality finish. The choice often depends on the design complexity and color requirements. DTG prints integrate well with the fabric, offering a soft feel.

Q: Why is DTG printing so expensive?

A: The actual equipment is expensive. Maintenance and R&D are expensive. It can cost $4 (or more!) in ink and pre-treat alone to do a colorful print on a dark shirt. Additionally, DTG printing is labor intensive.

Q: Is DTG cheaper than screen printing?

A: Cost. The direct-to-garment solution costs less than screen printing for smaller orders. This is because setting up the screen printing process is costly. However, while you can offset the cost, it typically requires a large bulk order.

Q: Is DTG printing easy?

A: DTG Printing is without a doubt one of the easiest ways to produce high-quality, ultra-custom apparel quickly. This isn't a transfer system, meaning this machine actually prints directly onto your shirt (hence the name Direct-to-Garment).

Q: Does DTG fade easily?

A: The quality of the machine, the inks used to print, the pretreatment, the underbase and the curing all factor into it. It also depends on how you wash it (stay away from hot water, harsh detergents and long dryer times). A quality DTG print can potentially get dozens of washes before it starts fading.

Q: Can I use DTG ink for DTF?

A: Most DTG inks work just fine with DTF printing, but DTF inks are specially formulated (and have less clogging potential as compared to DTG inks), so unless you plan on continuing DTG printing, you can plan on changing your inks out to DTF for best long term results.

Q: Is DTG low quality?

A: DTG has great print quality, unmatched by many other print methods and can get fine details better than screen printing. It also provides the versatility of printing one off designs without much preparation. Garments can also be pretreated up to six months ahead of time to minimize preparation times.

Q: Does DTG print on black?

A: Direct to garment printing on dark garments require printing a white under base below colored prints. When white ink is printed below black inks, the result can appear more "grey" than black. We recommend setting the darkest possible print black color in your file, which is "true black."

Q: Does DTG peel off?

A: All fabrics produced with the use of DTG and DTF technologies require gentle handling as far as it concerns washing, drying and ironing. The print is sensitive towards harsh conditions such as high temperature and high rpm washing cycles, meaning that the colors will fade, the inks will crack and even peel off.

Q: Is DTG a good investment?

A: DTG printers are a great investment for your print shop. Well…a great investment if you can meet the following three criteria: the right customers, the right equipment, and the right funnel. The most suitable textiles for DTG printing that are considered: Cotton, Combed Cotton, Organic Cotton, Linen, light-colored polyester and blends.

Q: Can you make money with DTG?

A: Unlike other methods, such as screen printing, DTG has low setup costs for a print job, making it profitable with small orders and one-offs. The biggest advantage of DTG is easy customization. images however you or your customer pleases.

Q: Which is cheaper DTF or DTG?

A: DTG printing is generally more expensive than DTF printing due to equipment Costs and ink Costs. However, the cost of DTF printers can vary depending on the features, quality, and brand. Can you print on Denim with a DTG printer? Simple answer, YES! Printing customized denim garments can get those creative juices flowing for most print shops. Here at DTG Connection we have seen customers print on custom denim jackets, jeans and even skirts.

Q: What temperature does DTG ink cure?

A: Around 330 degrees Fahrenheit
Make sure the temperature of your heat press is around 330 degrees Fahrenheit and proceed to press down your print image for 90 seconds. Once the allotted time has passed, remove the Heat Press Paper and your image should be heat cured. Instructions are the same when applied to a White, Black, and Colored garment.

Q: How can I make my DTG last longer?

A: Pre-treat Like a Pro: The Secret Weapon. Pre-treating your garments before printing creates a barrier that helps the ink bond with the fabric. The practice is called “pre-washing,” in simple terms, and it helps prevent the material from shrinking and altering the design.

Q: Does DTG printing peel off?

A: Durable Designs
The designs you print using DTG printers will last as long as screen-printed designs. These designs won't peel off or fade, which means that you can print high-definition images that will last the life of the garment.

Q: Is DTG permanent?

A: Once your garment is printed, the ink still needs to be cured into the fabric so that it will be permanent. To properly finish a DTG-printed item of clothing, a heat press is commonly used. Larger DTG operations sometimes opt for a tunnel dryer instead.

Q: Is DTG washable?

A: All fabrics produced with the use of DTG and DTF technologies require gentle handling as far as it concerns washing, drying and ironing. The print is sensitive towards harsh conditions such as high temperature and high rpm washing cycles, meaning that the colors will fade, the inks will crack and even peel off.
