Benefits of Water Based Ink

Environmentally Friendly

One of the most significant advantages of water-based ink is its low environmental impact. It emits fewer harmful chemicals into the atmosphere compared to solvent-based inks, reducing air pollution and contributing to a healthier environment.

Safety

Water-based inks are non-toxic and emit minimal odors, making them safer for use in enclosed spaces. This characteristic is particularly beneficial in settings like schools, hospitals, and homes where air quality and safety are paramount.

Versatility

Water-based inks can be used on a wide range of substrates, including paper, cardboard, fabric, and even some plastics. They are suitable for various printing methods such as screen printing, flexography, and digital printing, offering versatility to artists, designers, and manufacturers.

Color Range

Water-based inks are available in a vast spectrum of colors, including vibrant hues and subtle shades. Their ability to produce rich, opaque colors makes them popular in the printing industry for creating eye-catching designs.

Fast-Drying

Although water-based inks generally take longer to dry compared to solvent-based alternatives, advancements in technology have led to fast-drying formulations. This feature improves production efficiency and reduces waiting times during the printing process.

Types of Water Based Ink

01/

High Solids Water-Based Ink
High solids water-based inks are primarily used as white or neutral inks and can be blended with Eco-Pigments. They are engineered for dark fabrics, providing high opacity without sacrificing the softness of the print. This PVC-free alternative is highly valued for its ability to produce bright, opaque designs on dark textiles without the heavy feel associated with traditional inks.

02/

Medium Solids Water-Based Ink
Medium solids water-based inks offer semi-transparency, making them versatile for both light and dark backgrounds. They are ideal for full-color (halftone) printing, delivering vibrant and detailed designs with a minimal hand feel. This balance allows for intricate and colorful prints without overwhelming the fabric's natural texture.

03/

Low Solids Water-Based Ink
Low solids water-based inks are transparent, making them best suited for light backgrounds. They excel in solid or halftone printing, providing subtle designs that preserve the fabric's natural feel. This transparency is perfect for high-end fashion garments where the tactile quality of the fabric is paramount.

Discharge Inks
Discharge inks are specialized water-based inks designed for 100% cotton and reactive-dyed dark garments. They achieve vibrant colors through a bleaching process and are often used as under-prints. These inks offer minimal hand feel post-washing, allowing for vivid, soft prints on dark fabrics without added stiffness.

Application of Water Based Ink

Flexo printing: In this method, it uses flexible plates to transfer ink to the printing surface. Flexo printing can be used on a wide range of materials, including paper, cardboard, plastic and metal. The advantages of flexo printing with water-based ink can be mentioned as drying speed, high print quality, and environmental friendliness.

Offset printing: In offset printing, the image is first transferred to a metal plate, and then they use that plate to print on paper or cardboard. Offset printing is suitable for high-quality printing and high circulation. One of the advantages of offset printing with water-based ink is its high print quality and color accuracy.

Digital printing: In this method, the image is sent directly from the computer to the printer. Digital printing is suitable for printing short runs and printing on-demand. The advantages of digital printing with water-based ink include high printing speed, high print quality, and color variety.

Inkjet printing: In this method, ink is sprayed on paper or cardboard in the form of tiny droplets. Inkjet printing is suitable for printing high quality images and text. The advantages of inkjet printing with water-based ink include high printing speed, high print quality, and color variety.

Gravure printing: In gravure printing, the image is created by engraving on a metal cylinder. This method is suitable for printing on uneven surfaces, such as metal and plastic. The advantages of gravure printing with water-based ink include high printing speed, high print quality, and wear resistance.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between pigment ink and water-based ink?

A: Unlike water-based inks, pigment inks are water-resistant and more fade-resistant. They can be a great way to add color, texture, and vibrancy to your cards, scrapbooks, journals, and other paper crafts. Commonly, they are used in mixed media art and watercoloring projects.

Q: Do inkjet printers use water-based ink?

A: There are two types of water-based ink used in inkjet printers: dye-based ink and pigment-based one. Printing at home is often done on water-absorbent paper such as plain paper or inkjet exclusive paper, and therefore primarily uses dye-based ink, of which colorant penetrates into the medium (paper) to show the color.

Q: Does water based ink last?

A: Water based inks rarely wash off or have other problems typical to plastisol.

Q: Does water-based ink fade?

A: For water-based inks to achieve longevity, they must adequately penetrate the fabric. Insufficient penetration can result in surface-level prints, making them more prone to fading and washing out.

Q: How do you keep water based ink from drying out?

A: The easiest solution is adding a retarder to your ink. This is a clear additive that once adding no more that 20% will slow the dry time of your water based inks. This is a great fix especially for the inexperienced printer to not be worried about dry times while they get used to printing.

Q: Is water based ink flammable?

A: Water-Based Inks. Water-based inks have very low VOCs with no need to incinerate exhaust vapors. They are non-flammable, with no special handling or storage requirements.

Q: How long does water based ink take to cure?

A: You'll want to reach a cure temperature of 300 to 320 degree for the 2 to 3 minutes required for curing water-based ink, so set the conveyor dryer to a temperature between 550 and 600 degrees and lower the belt speed.

Q: How do you set water based ink?

A: The long-lasting finishes of water based inks requires a heat setting treatment, so fire up that drying tunnel or heat press. If you're printing at home, you can tumble dry, use a hand iron, dry it in the sun for a few days or even bake the fabric at a low temperature to set the pigments.
